As an architectural firm, it was a privilege to be able to restore a building like the Hooghuys. This is one of the oldest buildings in Mechelen and it is on the Unesco heritage list. We were therefore very happy to accommodate our office in the prestigious penthouse on the top floor. The restoration was based on two elements: respect for heritage and dialogue between old and new. We created an open space by removing the partition walls of the old nunnery rooms. In addition, the beam structure was repaired and restored. Finally, the pointed roof was insulated along the outside. We absolutely wanted to keep the beautiful beam structure visible.
