The neighbourhood around the Kouter and Veldstraat develops as a place where the industrial elite came to show and settle. This same elite sees the importance of making Ghent not only a rich industrial city but also of establishing a university as the crowning glory and expression of its prosperity. So it should come as no surprise that the city decides to award the university its first buildings in the immediate vicinity of the mansions in this elite district. Consequently, the buildings in the district refer to two themes, very different at first glance but nevertheless related: the establishment of a prominent social class and the foundation of a university. Mansions, city palaces and university buildings stand side by side here.
