Description

IN OPTION - Exceptional modernist home designed by architect Walter Van den Broeck in 1932.

Fantastic location in a beautiful part of Van Notenstraat, just across Te Boelaer Park, and with one architect's house after another. Greenery galore, quiet location yet close to the city, Berchem station and Deurne airport.

In 2012, the house was renovated by Christophe Bernaerts of the auction house of the same name. An art connoisseur and pure aesthete, he renovated the house with the utmost care and attention to the zeitgeist of the architecture. Cubex cabinets as cloakrooms, light blue Winckelmans tiles in the entrance hall, switches in Bakelite, restoration of the coloured stained-glass window, window fittings, staircase and doors in tropical wood. In addition, a new kitchen and bathroom were installed. The kitchen was fitted with an Aga stove and a black worktop that continues into a splashback of black Winckelmans tiles. The new bathroom has an authentic sink and a spacious walk-in shower.

The house itself was built of yellow-coloured Belvedere bricks with horizontally deep joints, the so-called Dudok joint. Blue stone was used for the capstones, the high door sill and the eaves, white natural stone for the integrated letterbox with the owner's name and the facade stone with the architect's name, and wood for the joinery. The house houses two bedrooms and an additional office room. The basement garage is super handy for bikes, as a storage area, and this is also where you'll find the laundry room.

As a garden contractor, the current owner optimised the garden. The red-tiled terrace was redone and supplemented with a wooden flower box. The wooden separation with the neighbours was renewed and a wild and romantic flower bed adorns this area.

The house has been designated a protected monument since 1995. If it is your own home, you can buy at 1% selling rights. You then have to put 5% into renovation within five years. Towards maintenance, you are eligible for annual subsidies for management or repair work.

The owner, Laurence,

owner speaks out

As an Antwerp architect, Walter Van den Broeck left behind a handsome oeuvre.
His career was short considering he died at the age of 40, but his architecture is powerful and still leaves an impression today. We immediately loved this house. We did not hesitate, but immediately took the plunge. You can only buy this kind of property once in a lifetime. The infill is bohemian, not perfect, but tremendously cosy and when you live here, you feel the power of the design.

The unique positioning of the windows in the façade are characteristic of Van den Broeck's designs. In each case, he uses a kind of abstract drawing to fill out the façade. The birch in the front garden also creates a mystical atmosphere. And the park across the street is, of course, fantastic. A pleasant Corona stroll is no problem for us. Cross the street and the giant trees smile at you. To the city we go by bakfiets or tram.

The street is quite exceptional in terms of architecture. Right next to us you find a house by Gustaaf Van Meel, next to it a unique cottage, a few houses further on you have a beautiful Kaplansky, and then Emiel Van Averbeke's own house. All over a distance of 100m! The best bit of Deurne you can live in.
