Description

Brutalist residence designed by Jo Crepain

Located in a quiet residential area in Hoevenen. Close to the village centre, six schools within a 2km range and several buses within walking distance.

Residence Verstraeten is about a creation from the early days of the creative Crepain. The reference to a modern castle lies at the heart of the design. Just as Panamarenko reverted to his inner child when creating his flight artworks, Crepain returned to his fantasy world to conceive this dwelling.

A circular concrete spiral staircase in the rear façade acts as a castle tower. A walkway above the kkn connects one sleeping area to another room. Concrete protrusions in the facade, see-through hatches in the bdrms, built-in planters, exposed concrete ceilings and bare brick allude to castle typology and pure brutalism.

Crepain sketched the house with, on the one hand, high, sunlit spaces where one gets energy to conquer the world - the 3.6m high living space - and, on the other hand, low, small, dark corners where one can hide in moments of intimacy - the cosy TV corner. The kkn is separate, yet connected to the living space via the dining area.

On the 1st floor, two spacious bedrooms, a bdk and separate WC. On the glvl, next to the TV corner, a third bedroom with dressing room and washbasin.

A cylindrical terrace connects the living space with the south-west facing garden. The garden has been pleasantly landscaped and lends itself perfectly to summer dinner parties.

An absolute must-buy for architecture lovers.

The owners,

owner speaks out

At the time, we absolutely fell in love with this property.

We were looking for a property with character and boldness - not obvious in the late 1970s. When we went to visit the property, we almost cancelled the appointment. We didn't know the neighbourhood and the residential area didn't appeal to us at first. Fortunately, we kept the appointment anyway!

Upon entering the house, we immediately knew, "this is where we want to live".

When I was expecting twins with a second pregnancy, we contacted Jo Crepain to renovate the house. On the ground floor, together with Jo, we created the master bedroom - a very successful intervention.

The remodelling only increased our love and respect for the house and the architect. And overall, the purchase of the house has had a great influence on our current passion for architecture and culture. Living in this kind of creation adds an extra dimension to your life.

The neighbourhood turned out to be fantastic in the end! You have many schools nearby and the atmosphere is very friendly and congenial. I would move here again in no time.
