In the heart of Mechelen’s most iconic shopping street lies a unique architectural gem: Hof van Grimbergen, featuring a lush urban garden—surprisingly green and peaceful—also accessible via a quiet lane at the rear, just like the covered parking spaces.
Behind its grand façade unfolds a haven of tranquillity within one of Mechelen’s oldest listed monuments, with records dating back to 1303. The building took on its current form in 1912, when architect Hemelsoet transformed it into an eclectic urban palace. The finishes are nothing short of majestic: gold leaf, Empire style, exquisite marbles, gilded stucco, and decorative wall panels. The wrought-iron gate and staircase are by master blacksmith L. Van Boeckel. Several restorations have taken place over time, always in consultation with heritage authorities—preserving this magical place for generations to come.
Inside, you’ll find several opulent salons, a dining room, library, office, piano room, dressing area, eight bedrooms, and seven bathrooms. The kitchen opens via folding doors onto a blissful terrace and sunny garden. At the very top, a spacious attic offers a unique panoramic view over the city.
A separate service staircase and discreet rear entrance allow for flexible use—ideal for cohousing, a refined live–work combination, or professional offices. These exceptional spaces also lend themselves effortlessly to a wide variety of uses—residential, commercial, or cultural. This is not just a place to live; it’s a place to host, inspire, and create.
A historic architectural masterpiece in exceptional condition.
