Description

Where Ridderstraat and Kwaadham intersect, at the foot of St Bavo's Cathedral, the Oude Beestenmarkt and the Reep, lies this fantastic spot, central Ghent, where you will experience surprising peace and quiet inside. After all, this is a residential area with no through traffic. The residential house on the left dates from 1746, the one on the right is even a century older! Not surprisingly, tourists often take a photo of this historic corner house. Later, the two houses were merged into the current layout. The property was completely renovated to contemporary standards in 2019, thankfully preserving the authentic elements and charming style of the front façade beautifully.

In the entrance hall, steel leaded glasses separate the front room from the large dining room on French voile oak parquet flooring and authentic mantelpiece. In the adjoining living room with high ceiling, again an authentic mantelpiece (possible gas fireplace) and large glass windows, you have enough space for an XL sitting area. From the fully fitted kitchen, with top Miele appliances, you overlook the garden terrace with its beautiful lilac tree and enclosed garden shed. Super cute and handy door to the rear entrance on Ridderstraat. Dry cellar storage room.

At +1 you will find 2 spacious en-suite bedrooms and one with dressing room. Steel stairs to the mezzanine, currently office. At +2 another stunning bedroom awaits under the original wooden truss. The separate (technical) room could be converted into a 3rd en suite bathroom.

A unique and special place to make your dreams come true.

The owners,

owner speaks out

'Both the building and the neighbourhood are steeped in centuries-old history, at the crossroads of different neighbourhoods that converge here. Here you have cultural, commercial and more alternative Ghent within walking distance. In our beautiful street you will find many nice houses and - always nice - nice neighbours. Moreover, in this car-free street you will experience a lot of peace and quiet, even though you are in the heart of the city. Ridderstraat will soon be transformed into a residential area, with more greenery and extra space for cyclists and pedestrians, and the renovated Reep is also a huge added value.

I've always had a soft spot for corner houses, because there you have super much light. It's no different in this house. The view through into Jan Palfijnstraat is also very pleasant. On the outside it looks a bit like a gingerbread house, inside you are surprised by the sense of space and the high ceilings.

We renovated this house in 2019/2020, preserving as many authentic elements as possible, such as the fireplace mantels and wooden beams. How nice it is to step out the door in the evening and enjoy the beautifully lit Ghent. With a drink we ended our day, you get an instant city trip feeling. For us, this was a wonderful pied-à-terre, combined with our gallery.'
