Description

Aartstraat refers to the medieval 'de Aert', a mooring for waterborne transport, probably one of the first embankments in the village. Close to shops, schools, cultural centre, academy and sports hall.

In this former director's house from 1905, the initials MV above the front door refer to the builder, Mathys Vertongen.

Lots of authentic elements abound: original herringbone parquet, wooden ornaments and unique details in each room. Stately entrance hall with high ceilings, marble floor and delicately finished wooden staircase realised by sculptor K. Aubroeck.

In the large open living room with dining area, wood panelling, oak parquet and marble mantelpiece with wood fire, you are immersed in the grandeur of yesteryear. Four stained-glass doors lead to the master piece: the stunning winter garden with magnificent stained-glass dome, renovated to original design with adjacent new kitchen (2018). A handy storage room with laundry, toilet and a separate living room or office complete the ground floor.

From the large, open garden you have a beautiful view of the Durme and nature reserve Meulendijkbroek.

On the 1st floor: 4 large bedrooms and 1 smaller room. Separate bathroom with bath, shower, toilet and double washbasin. On the 2nd floor: attic space with wooden trusses, an empty canvas with masses of possibilities. Also the 2 covered garages with multi-purpose warehouse (207m2) and the charming workman's house, now garden house, have a lot of potential. An exceptional property to dream away...

Former director's house with warehouse, garages and large, open garden on the Durme: unseen possibilities.

The owners,

owner speaks out

'I always start my day with a delicious cup of coffee in the kitchen. Waking up from my black armchair with a view of the garden is blissful. This is where I find inner peace. Watching the sun set in the Durme is something we enjoy at the back on the terrace at the water's edge. Here you have a wide view that you never get used to. Bird watching can also be done from the garden. After all, the nature reserve behind it provides a rare wealth of fauna and flora, and we benefit from this too.

From organising my first childhood parties upstairs in the attic, to later watching my husband build camps with our son - my childhood home is truly a home with a soul, many stories and memories. Now our granddaughter studies with great wonder the figures on the beautiful glass dome in the winter garden.'
