Description

Fantastic, brutalist penthouse and home of renowned architect Jo Crepain, with unrivalled views of Scheldt and city.

Does the South need any introduction? One renowned gallery and design shop after another (e.g. Modern Living), with pedestrian tunnel, Waterbus, 't Eilandje, KMSKA, Fotomuseum, MUHKA and historic centre close by. An extremely inspiring place.

Jo Crepain (1950-2008), widely known and internationally acclaimed architect with an astonishingly rich oeuvre. The grand master himself lived in this sublime penthouse with his wife.

Duplex loft on levels 3 and 4 of a historic warehouse in eclectic style from 1899, designed by architect duo Vereecken, who also designed the Entrepot du Congo. During the renovation (1995-1997), Jo Crepain added an extra floor, just 4 metres high.

On the 3rd floor: 3 to 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Pièce de résistance? The central area with a beautiful creative space: the perfect place for art exhibitions, vernissages and a fantastic cinema room.

The 4th floor contains the living spaces: a super-equipped kitchen and an immense living room with sleek, large fireplace and 4-metre-high ceilings. The sublime customisation was designed by good friend the late Maarten Van Severen. The windows above the library frame the view of the Cathedral of Our Lady like a work of art.

The stunning terrace is bordered by a green roof and a seamless glass balustrade, giving you an endless panoramic depth view and true garden feel overlooking the Scheldt.

Finally, 2 garages on the glvl, basement and lift that take you to both floors. For true lovers of art and architecture.

owner speaks out

Daughter, Britt, recounts:
I had already left home when my parents moved in, but I vividly remember that they threw many legendary parties here. Dinners, parties with staff, art happenings, music nights for a select audience with Dez Mona or other great artists... The good life, so to speak. Mum enjoyed organising all that and they are all fantastic memories. As purebred art collectors, my parents also indulged themselves immensely in the central room on the 3rd floor. Not to mention the first-class view of the fireworks over the Scheldt on New Year's Eve.

Dad had his office downstairs, where he worked through many a night. But once he took the lift upstairs, there was nothing but peace and quiet. The view over the Scheldt, the clouds, the silence... That was his dream, 100% enjoyment. Here my parents were in heaven.

By the way, the loft is right in front of the turning point of those gigantic cruise ships that regularly call at Antwerp. Then suddenly it got dark in the living room and if we looked aside, we could see a cruise ship making its turn on the Scheldt. Super-impressive! Extra special for us, because my grandfather, my father's father, was captain on the long circumnavigation. This loft has been a very special place for my parents, for me and for a lot of other people.
