Description

In one of the most beautiful streets of the Great Beguinage in Mechelen (UNESCO heritage), with the iconic Het Anker brewery as a charming neighbor at the back, you enjoy peaceful and quiet living, yet just a stone’s throw from the vibrant city center.

The Beguinage house ‘The Four Evangelists’ is a stunning and striking presence in the car-restricted Beguinage. Since 1986, it has been officially listed as a monument in the heritage inventory. Architect Karel Beeck carried out a successful full restoration 27 years ago, preserving many authentic elements such as the child beams and the beautiful front and rear façades. Other features, like interior doors and small shutters, were completely recreated according to the original design.

On the ground floor, you’ll find a charming sitting room on the right and a modern kitchen with a cozy bench seat on the left, overlooking the sunny south-facing city garden with a handy terrace cupboard. The beautifully light blue painted woodwork adds a romantic touch of Provence.

Mezzanine with raised room and toilet. First floor with two spacious bedrooms and a bathroom. Under the magnificent roof structure lies the attic floor: currently one large space used as an extra lounge and office. Of course, you can also create a generous third and even fourth bedroom here. Plans and provisions for a second bathroom are ready. Finally, there is also a cellar.

If you want to live like royalty in France, but in Mechelen, you’ve found your unique spot here!

When you sit in the garden, the peace and quiet are truly overwhelming.
The owner,

owner speaks out

When I first visited this property, I had a checklist of criteria I wanted to tick off. I was looking for an atmospheric, old house with a kitchen large enough for a table for eight guests. These requirements were already met here. Furthermore, the prime location, just a five-minute walk from the center, schools, and shops, was an important criterion. In the other direction, you can quickly reach supermarkets, buses to the station, and the highway entrance. The garden was also very important to me. When I discovered that this garden had enough privacy and a south-facing terrace, I immediately saw it: I could make something beautiful here. When you sit in the garden, the peace and quiet are truly overwhelming. And the cherry on top? That the neighbors are so friendly and helpful! This place soon became my home. Whoever will live here next is very lucky.
