In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Coupure was a busy trade route connecting Ghent to Bruges. When the first mansions appeared along the bank, workers were banished. Now the banks accommodate rows of plane trees. The Coupure Left was built mainly in the course of the 19th century with bourgeois and town houses in neo-classical style with white-plaster façade, on the Coupure Right the oldest buildings were replaced mainly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by large bourgeois and town houses in neo-style.

We gather at the corner of Lindenlei and Coupure Right for a 2-hour walk. Our guide Eugeen Roegiest, a walking encylopedie of the region, takes us through the streets and points out the extraordinary architecture that was realised on the Coupure.

We ended our walk at 'Casa Coupure'. An initiative by Joke and Tom where they open their coach house five times a year as an aperobar for local residents. A successful Sunday!
