On Sunday 19 June 2022, we organised our first architectural walk in Mechelen! Different styles such as Modernism, Art Deco and Expo 58 style were covered. During the tour, we walked in the footsteps of Mechelen architects such as Jos Chabot, Jan Lauwers and Alfons Roose. These architects were trendsetters between the 1920s and 1960s!
It was a fascinating and surprising encounter with modern living. During the walks, we admired Jos Chabot's modernist architect's house in Willem Geetsstraat . We were also charmed by the modernist home Andries in Colomastraat 24-26 by the same Jos Chabot.
We walked on past Huib Hoste's listed house Lens on Schuttersvest 7, also in modernist architectural style. We then passed Alfons Roose's architect's house at 31 Adegemstraat in Expo 58 style.
We also considered the progressive and distinct vision of Jan Lauwers and were able to ascertain this from his modernist building at Ijzerenleen 2-4.
Finally, we ended at the beautifully renovated loft complex Huyghebaert, near our brand new office in Sint-Katelijnestraat where we enjoyed a drink. It was a fine first introduction to the vibrant city of Mechelen and its beautiful buildings.
