The Prinsenhof has a very rich history. It was created by building around the former Hof ten Walle, the residence of the viscount of Ghent. In 1500 it was also the birthplace of Emperor Charles V and from then on was called Prinsenhof. In the 20th century, all visible remains of that former Prinsenhof were already destroyed or disappeared behind renovations.

Only the northern entrance, the so-called Dark Gate, remained largely preserved as a building. Especially from the 1970s onwards, a new generation presented itself. They were looking for affordable and cosy housing in the city centre. From then on, residents took the initiative to renovate 'their neighbourhood'. Today, the Prinsenhof neighbourhood is a neighbourhood with a residential character, a cosy place to live for young and old.

On Sunday 23 April, we will walk through Prinsenhof under the guidance of Eugeen Roegiest, an experienced city guide. We will start the walk at the church of the Old Beguinage Sint-Elisabeth - followed by an aperitif offered by Immodôme.
