Description

Quiet and residential in Old Berchem, within the Singel. Close to Green Quarter, supermarkets, parks, approach roads and public transport.

Former luxurious 'Hotel Garlinck' from 1912, by architect Michel De Braey, and always very well maintained (gas boiler, insulated roof (2021), refurbished front facade (2017). The owners kept the authentic elements to the maximum: table with embedded bell system, chandeliers, handles, stained glass, (mosaic) tiles, bath, marble fireplaces, etc. Even the original service bell system still works, as does the lift from basement to mansard.

Magnificent stairwell with stained glass: the hub of the house. Bell-floor with lounge, atmospheric kitchen and Salle à manger with impressive panelling and lovely terrace. Stately staircase leading to the lush garden. Also the basement, formerly dental practice, now professional caterer's kitchen with prestigious wine cellar for 7000 (!) bottles, opens onto the garden. (Renewed electricity, 2 separate counters.)

Master bedroom, bathroom and imposing Grand Salon, the showroom at +1. On the 2nd floor, beaux-arts and art-nouveau melt together in the generous bedroom with en suite bathroom (original tiles by Villeroy & Boch designed by Peter Behrens), 1 guest room with maid's room and balcony, separate toilet and kitchenette (possibly convertible to bathroom). Upstairs mansard with 4 more bedrooms and shower room, formerly for the servants.

Beautifully preserved Art Deco house in a prime residential location with countless possibilities: XL family home, with or without office or commercial function, luxurious B&B or who knows even a hotel?

From the moment we saw the stunning stairwell, we were instantly in love.

owner speaks out

For more than forty years, we lived here. From the moment we saw the stunning stairwell, we fell in love instantly. Then we knew for sure: this is where we wanted to expand our family and raise our children. Those children have grown up, now it's our grandchildren who bring life into the house. So many beautiful memories: Christmas together, the many parties and events for often very many people, it was all possible here. The house is still often used as a film set. Even in May, filming is still planned. The terrace is also invaluable to us. As soon as we can, we eat outside. Now it's time for a new chapter, but how we will miss this place....
