Description

This charming side street off the Veemarkt will soon be car-free, making it even quieter. Close to Bar Bib, Tinèlle, the city library Predikherenklooster, and just minutes from the Grote Markt. Easy access to major roads, 1.5 km from Mechels Broek, and 400 m from Nekkerspoel station.

Originally three adjoining houses, the property was converted about five years ago into one large family home. With 489 m² of living space, the options are plentiful.

The spacious ground floor, mostly with underfloor heating, was renovated in 2020. Entrance hall with old church tiles, XL living room on oak parquet with two seating areas and a cosy gas fireplace. Large dining room and kitchen with AGA stove and views of the west-facing garden with terrace and shed. First bedroom and bathroom with shower and infrared sauna. Storage, toilet, cellar.

Take the new oak staircase or original stairs to the first floor: huge office space and second bedroom at the front on original wooden floors. At the back, a second bathroom and two more bedrooms, one used as a dressing. This rear part could use some refreshing.

On the second floor, the fourth bedroom—two connected rooms—plus living area, kitchen, third bathroom and toilet make this level ideal for a live-in student or (grand)parent. The 48 m² attic can be finished to your needs. Optional garage 50 m away.

A rare chance to combine tranquillity and generous space in a stylish family home with garden in the heart of Mechelen.

owner speaks out

After more than thirty years of living here with great joy, in this house that truly became our home, we are passing it on with warm hearts to new residents. Our children were born and raised here, and the house is filled with beautiful memories — even though we once believed we would never want to live in a city. But with this house it was love at first sight, a real love story. We renovated it not once but twice, transforming this 19th-century building into a modern, contemporary home. Now that our children have left the nest, the house has simply become too big for just the two of us. On the terrace, in the quietness of our enclosed, green garden, you never feel like you’re in the city, yet once you walk out the front door, you enjoy every advantage this wonderful city has to offer. Want nature? A 1.5 km walk brings you to a nature reserve, and a short bike ride takes you along the Dijle or the canal toward the Zennegat. Peace in the city, with nature just moments away — for us, it has been the perfect combination. Living within walking distance of the Grote Markt is incredibly convenient, with schools, shops and public transport nearby. The indoor spaces are delightful as well. In the colder months we enjoy cosy afternoons and evenings by the gas fireplace, while the AGA stove spreads a pleasant warmth and produces delicious meals. In the beautiful upstairs space — now an office or (wo)man cave — you are flooded with natural light, one of our favourite places to work or simply unwind… Pure enjoyment.
