Description

Close to the village centre and the peaceful natural beauty of the Oude Landen, it's an ideal place to combine work and family.

De Grooff House, built in 1836 for steward Antonius Harrewijn, is one of the oldest houses in Ekeren. In 1885, master builder Théophile De Grooff put his stamp on this imposing residence. In 2011, the building was completely renovated in collaboration with architects.

Central corridor with original tiled floor and imposing staircase. Country kitchen with dining area, AGA electric cooker, bluestone and oak. Laundry room with side entrance: useful for bikes or scooters.

In the living room with a slight neoclassical touch, enjoy the fireplace, which overlooks the large garden (SW). Neo-Flemish Renaissance-style dining room, with card room, low panelled walls; the initials of De Grooff inside; a blue border with gilded texts by Jacob Cats, a 17th-century writer famous for his proverbs and sayings... Every part of this house exudes history, and behind every ceiling painting is a legend.....

At +1: master bedroom with en suite bathroom, dressing table and 2 spacious bedrooms (1 of which is now a study). At +2, 2 further large attic bedrooms and a bathroom with bath and shower.

Each floor has access to the modern study to the right of the building. Separate entrance, lift, 4 consulting rooms, renovated to perfection in 2011 - you can start here. Service road to rear, and permission for carport and annexe already applied for.

owner speaks out

'We passed this house every day on our way to work and.... One day it was for sale. It looked a bit run-down but we were curious. When we went to have a look, we fell in love instantly. In every nook, in every detail, you could immediately see that this house was brimming with history. Like walking into a museum! To this day, we have preserved those authentic elements as carefully as possible.
The house is almost bursting at the seams with historical stories and legends... For instance, the motto of the original occupant, Théophile De Grooff, was 'slow but steady' - which is why you see turtles all over the walls and ceilings. The Angel Room is also very special. You feast your eyes on the 6m by 4m ceiling painting. It depicts an idyllic scene of muses with harp and other instruments. That painting dates from the time De Grooff lived here. Back then, it was very fashionable to furnish your dining room with extra luxury. The large garden, our oasis of calm, completes the picture.

The house is all history, but the practice was renovated in a modern way. It became a very bright place with lots of space - a multifunctional space that still leaves a lot of freedom to fill it as you like. We are immensely grateful to have been able to live here. Don't forget that this house has survived almost two centuries AND two world wars! We are honoured to have been a small part of that history. Now that the children have left home, this special place has become too big for the two of us. We are very happy to pass it on to the next generations, with a thousand fond memories of the wonderful moments we had here with our children and grandchildren.'
