Description

Sintra and its surroundings, UNESCO World Heritage Site, with many castles and palaces all around. Ten-minute walks to Portela da Sintra, the picturesque village at the bottom of the hill, hiking in the forested mountains of Serra da Sintra Natural Park, surfing or swimming on the West Coast... This magical place is a must-see. With Lisbon 35 kilometres away, easily accessible, this is a dream destination to live or as a home away from home.

Magisterial architect's house. Designed in 1974 by João Vasconcelos Esteves for a family of seven plus domestic help, today a spacious home with Airbnb, to completely unwind. Future-proof remodelled in '22-'24, with solar panels and heat pump, retaining the original terracotta floor and woodwork, among other things.

Rear wing ground floor: well-run Airbnb with living space, kitchenette, bedroom, bathroom. Stairwell to first floor with wide views over city and mountains. All living spaces are U-shaped around the heart of the house: the terrace with typical Portuguese clinkers in wave pattern, a nod to Rio's Copacobana beach.

The sloping roof, fireplace with gigantic curved concrete countertop across the entire width of the living room, several entrances, giga windows... Small and large details make this house interesting - and architect Esteves clearly paid a lot of attention to them. Large living kitchen with Bora hob and granite worktop. On the second floor you will find the 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.

The evergreen garden with herb hill, fig trees, nespera trees, cork trees and chestnut trees, spreads over three floors. The bonus is literally on top: the easily maintained swimming pool with terrace and phenomenal views.

owner speaks out

Like a lot of places in Portugal, Sintra has no real winters. Almost all year round it is sunny and pleasant here. In winter, the temperature never drops below ten degrees, but thanks to the favourable mountain climate, summers are never extremely hot either. Temperatures rarely rise to 35 degrees, which is the case in, say, Lisbon. There, people flee the city, here you stay and enjoy the ideal conditions.
The Airbnb is also super convenient. Because the guesthouse has a separate entrance, through the garden, and you can close off the place with a closet wall, that part of the house is multi-purpose. As a result, the studio has already served as a teenage studio, study, office, guesthouse.... When there are no guests, we slide open the closet wall and this also becomes part of the house.
We are also big fans of Esteves' architecture. The way he managed to capture the light, his eye for detail, the layout of the rooms and the villa's implantation on the hill.... It always makes a little magic in the air here.
